One club
With low attendance figures and increasing running costs, board members at GAIS Göteborg, Örgryte IS and BK Häcken have discussed the possibility of forming one club, mirroring the move by AB København and B1903 København which led to the birth of Danish Superligaen champions FC København in 1992.The city’s fourth and biggest-supported club, IFK Göteborg have rejected the any involvement with the new outfit, which would be called FC Gothia.
Realistic possibility
Supporters of the clubs involved are unhappy about the plans, but GAIS chairman Christer Wallin says it is a move which must be considered for the future of the clubs. "It’s a possibility that we must look into," he said. "There is no doubt a huge sentimental issue amongst the fans, but there’s also the facts and figures of the clubs' balance sheets and those facts and figures don’t add up today. Today there are four clubs fighting for the same money, the same sponsors and the town is just not big enough for all four of us to reach the top so we have to be positive about the possibility."
Painful reality
Such sentiment is also backed by Örgryte chairman Mats Rydhede, whose side - like Häcken - are currently in the Swedish second tier."The clubs are yo-yoing up and down the leagues," he said. "The fact is that it costs a lot to play elite football and not least when you fail to establish yourself in the top division. I represent a club that is over 120 years old and I know this merger is not something that should be taken lightly, but it can be done."
Supporter power
Supporters unhappy at the proposal demonstrated outside the press conference organised to outline the plans for the new club. Leading GAIS supporter David Landerin said: "At first I thought it was a joke but when I realised it wasn’t, it hurt. The board should know that an act like this would kill the heart and soul of these clubs. We can’t let it happen. It’s ridiculous." Club officials are aware of the power of the supporters and any merger would not go ahead without their backing. "If the members don’t want it, then it’s not going to happen, but we must at least look into it," said Wallin.

Football was the winner at the City Ground when Leicester gifted Nottingham Forest a goal but still won their Carling Cup clash.
Three weeks earlier the original game between the sides was abandoned after Leicester defender Clive Clarke collapsed in the dressing room at half-time.
Forest were leading 1-0 at the time and when the game was played again, Leicester insisted that they gift the home side their goal advantage.
From the kick-off Leicester stood to one side to allow goalkeeper Paul Smith to stroll through and give Forest back their lead.
Leicester boss Gary Megson said: "It was something that the chairman, chief executive and myself decided two or three days ago.
"We felt it was morally right for us to come here and start 1-0 behind in reacting to what went on three weeks ago.
"As a football club we felt it was the right way to behave and it was a gesture meant in the spirit of the game.
Honourable
"I had a chat with Forest manager Colin Calderwood 20 minutes before the kick-off to explain what we had in mind but it was kept very quiet until just before the start.
"Obviously, it turned out right for us because we have made the gesture and ended up winning the game and going through to a very attractive tie against Aston Villa next week."
Colin Calderwood added: "Leicester felt it was the correct thing to do and I must admit it took us back a little bit to start with.
"But it was an honourable gesture and I would like to think that football in general has come out of the game as the winner.
"I think the crowd took it in the spirit that it was intended but I can't help but feel disappointed and hurt that we didn't go on to win the game.
Marvellous
"I thought Leicester were better than us in the first half but we produced a marvellous performance in the second and we were within touching distance of going through.
"But football has a habit of biting your backside and that is what has happened again for us when we conceded two goals in the last three minutes.
"We were very good last season at not leaking late goals and it is something we have got to sort out."
After Smith's 'walk-through' opener, Leicester equalised from an Alan Sheehan free-kick on the half-hour and looked as though they might take a grip on the game.
But Nathan Tyson restored Forest's lead in the 64th minute when he moved on to a pass from Kris Commons to beat Marton Fulop.
At that stage it looked as though Forest would go through but their former manager had the last word when he got his first victory as Leicester boss thanks to two goals in the last three minutes.
Richard Stearman forced home an 87th-minute equaliser and in the last minute skipper Stephen Clemence pounced on a loose ball to score from 20 yards.

LONDON – Der Startrainer gibt auf: Nach dem enttäuschenden 1:1 gegen Rosenborg und einem mittelmässigen Saisonbeginn von Chelsea erklärte José Mourinho seinen Rücktritt.
Der Abschied erfolge in beiderseitigem Einvernehmen, teilten Mourinho und der Chelsea Football Club am heutigen Donnerstag mit. Der Vertrag mit einer Jahresgage von vermutlich 9,2 Millionen Euro (rund 15,2 Millionen Franken) hätte noch eine Laufzeit von drei Jahren gehabt.
Neuer Trainer der «Blauen» wird möglicherweise der Trainer des FC Sevilla, Juande Ramos. Er hielt sich am Mittwoch in London auf, wo sein Klub dem Chelsea-Rivalen Arsenal mit 0:3 unterlag.
Mourinho kam 2004 zu Chelsea, nachdem der portugiesische Trainer mit dem FC Porto die Champions League gewonnen hatte. Zweimal führte er Chelsea zur Meisterschaft in der englischen Premier League. In der letzten Saison gewann aber Manchester United den Titel. Nach zwei Niederlagen im Halbfinale der Champions League soll sich das Verhältnis zum Chelsea-Investor Roman Abramowich merklich abgekühlt haben.
Zurzeit liegt Chelsea, das im vergangenen Jahr den deutschen Mittelfeldspieler Michael Ballack verpflichtet hat, nur auf Platz fünf der englischen Liga. Am Sonntag tritt Chelsea gegen Manchester United an, dann wird die Elf vermutlich von Assistenztrainer Steve Clarke betreut.

Scolari für vier Spiele gesperrt
Portugals Fussball-Nationaltrainer Luiz Felipe Scolari ist von der Kontroll- und Disziplinarkommission der UEFA für vier Spiele gesperrt worden.
Der 58-Jährige Brasilianer wurde für seinen Faustschlag gegen den Serben Ivica Dragutinovic im Anschluss an das EURO-Qualifikations-Spiel vom 12. September bestraft. Zusätzlich muss er eine Busse von 12'120 Euro bezahlen. Scolari fehlt somit seinem Team für die entscheidende Phase der EURO-Qualifikation.
